As I finish my re-write of book 3 chapter 2, something I wrote in my last blog post is really sticking with me. I was trying too hard. I got caught up in being a “writer” and not doing what I do best, telling a fun story.

There is a point where you can analyze too much, you can take too much input (tutorials on how other people do it, Et al.), follow too much advice and simply get lost in it all. Writing is a medium of self expression and I was trying too hard to be something I’m not. I tell fun stories, big blockbuster movie kind of thing. A story you can get lost in for a few moments and escape reality and have a good time.

Some day maybe I’ll post the original version of this chapter and people see the stark difference between the two. The first one almost reads like an artsy take on my story, rather than the action packed adventure it’s supposed to be. Artsy can be good, but it’s not me. I’m glad I made the change.

Now on to those other chapters! Image from book1 chapter 22

This 3rd book is kicking my butt. I had multiple rewrites on the 1st chapter. Realized I needed to change the 3rd chapter to address pacing issues. Now, went back to reference something in the 2nd chapter and found I made a fundamental writing mistake, show don’t tell.

Really, I can hear my editor busting my chops on this chapter already. So, I’m going to fix it. I figured out a way to move the timeline, ever so slightly, that will let me show things I was simply explaining. It will make for a stronger scene and will actually add more to the over-all story. Bonus plus, it will not affect the next chapter since it will end in the exact same place. The negative? Well, to make it work, I need to re-write the entire chapter. Sigh.

Maybe I’m trying too hard with this book, but I never had this problem on the first 2.

Still, progress is progress. Stay positive!

Image from book 1 chapter 21. This one seems oddly appropriate, since I keep revising the “plan”. Till next time, my friends!

Last couple weeks have been busy. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been with my writing. Regular business, wife and kid away visiting family, me taking care of the dog, TAXES(!) it’s left me scrambling to find some free time. Still, I move forward.

Had time to submit a short story to Grimdark Magazine. I wrote it during a weekend over holiday vacation. For those that have read my books, this story is different. Way different. First, it’s a fantasy piece. Second, it should go without saying, it is grim-dark. If you’re not familiar with that kind of fantasy story, it’s about morally grey characters doing morally grey things. Not all happy endings and heroes saving the day. While this will seem pretty opposite of my books, let me assure you, I’m comfortable writing this way.

I have a lot of stories that I hope to tell at some point that are more “adult” in nature. The “Jax Brandt” novels are written with a more young adult frame in mind. This is both for my daughter and I find it easier to write. I’ve done short stories my whole life, even if they’ve never seen the light of day. Jax has given me the chance to learn how to write books and continues to teach me. Plus, you rarely see mixed race (Japanese and German in Jax’s case) characters in a book. I wanted my daughter to see that there is a future for that.

It might be a few months before I hear anything from Grimdark Mag, but I will keep you updated as I find out more. IF they don’t pick up my short story, my plan is to have it edited and offer it up as a Kindle quick read. I like it enough that I will definitely create more short stories in that world… well, as time allows, anyway.

Today’s image is from book 1 chapter 20.

    On words to more words.
